Really depends on what you want...

Looking for tons of mods, support, themes, and just overall widely used?
phpBB - It's powerful, it's got a TON of possibilities. They also have phpBB3.

Looking for an already powerful board with not a lot of addons and themes?
Try out myBB. Not a lot of support and it's not very widely used, but still a GREAT software.

    Overall greatness...
SMF is overall great in fuctionability but I have a few issues with the cosmetic qualities. It's very nice, lots of mods and themes.

Honestly, you can take a relatively good, free forum and turn it into a monster of a forum greater than what vBulletin has to offer. It just takes time.

Invisionfree isnt a type of forum.. its a forum host... They use an old version of Invision Power board. IPB costs, but is a VERY VERY powerful forum software "/

phpbb 3 is supposedly quite good, although i dont think its supported yet. SMF is also nice.

SMF is good www.simplemachines.org comes with many mods already installed and is very easy to use. Simple if you dont like messing about with PHP files just to install a MOD like you do with phpbb.
