Coz they have to be made stronger by rubbing this random stuff into it.. also they're made out of willow which is a hardwood and takes along time to grow
Partly correct.
I bought mine cheaply [cheapskate] and I had to oil it with linseed oil and "knock-it-in" myself which is a task in itself.
It mainly depends on who you go with, and what wood it's made out of.
More expensive = more quality.
Willow is a soft wood by the way.
You're right there, grade 1/2 English willow isn't cheap. I didn''t have to oil mine, plus there was already a scuff sheet on it. Technically I didn't have to knock it in, but half an hour is always good. Nearly all bats have to be knocked in before they're used.
