iPod 1 (Mini 4GB) : left it for a few months w/o touching it and it went dead, literally.

iPod 2 (Nano 2GB 1st Gen): Lost it on a holiday to Taiwan

iPod 3(Nano 4GB 2nd Gen): Hope nothing happens

Nano 2GB 1st Gen: I had it for 3 days and went on camp. I went though the caves and left it in my bag, 2 hours later we got back on the bus and my whole bottom of the screen had cracked and you couldn't see it. 9 months later with still the cracked screen I got a virus on it from putting a song on it then I took it back to the Apple shop and they gave me a new one under warrantly for the cracked screen. I went 9 months with half of a screen!

every iPod has a scratch well thats my theory.
