EG Collect all of the coins to unlock charecters etc. In my opinion the reason it has come out like this is the rise in Multiplayer. It used to be single player was the main feature and multiplayer kind of an add on to extend the game length, now games are mostly focused around multiplayer. Take Halo 2 for an example, the campaign took me 3 days you compare that to say Goldeneye on the N64 which takes AGES and after your done you have to complete it on 00 Agent to unlock other levels.
But just think, when you played these games, you must of been alot younger then you are now. If you tryed playing them now you may find them alot easier.
