    Would you expect a complete newcomer to programming start coding in Javascript?

    You don't develop desktop programs in Javascript.

    its not "newbish" it's good for beginners. and it's not very annoying..
    Visual Basic is a TERRIBLE start for begginers. It'll ruin your chances of learning a language like C# with ease. Dive straight into a good language like as I said C# or something like C++ or Python.

    It doesn't ruin your chance of learning language's like C#, you can learn any language :S. it's that simple, i learnt vb6. now im onto C++ at the moment. so it hasn't really ruinned my chance of learning something better...

    Anything they teach in 6th Form is newbish as its easy to learn with

    im currently learning VB again and Java .

    Java is slightly easyer to use however VB is good as everything is already there such as Radio buttons , Buttons etc, all you do is code the shell is already there.

    Vbs a good start if you new its simple and the drag and drop GUI with its predefined objects allows you to gain a number of oop benifits without really needing any direct understanding of oop programming.

    Java is nicer, but you have to build your own guis which likly isnt very easy if your new to it... the same with most langauges :p

    If you really really have to use VB atleast use VB.Net not VB6.

    However, I recommend you learn something like C++ or C#.
