Basically when you buy the game you get your authentication code for your account, which makes it a full account (ie you can use the auction house and mail system etc) entering this on your account page also gives you 1 month free game time as a gift from Blizzard. However, you can't give that code to Niamh as he's already authenticated his account and had his free time.

That's added when you add your authentication key though, and Niamh has already done that. Plus you'll need to use it surely if you still on a trial account.
