No one makes fansites for money, I can tell you that now and anyone who trys fails, ALTHOUGH if you know the right people and work hard you can make profit, Trust me i know :]
But using the money on stupid things like a xbox game with come and bite you back maybe sever bills go large or something you always need a backup.

Some people just enjoy making a fansite which supports Habbo, some people do it for profit and some people do it to get popular.

Most of the time it isn't to make money off mugs like me. (Habbox Vip) It's just that Habbox is lucky enough to be the main source for rare values and is most probably the most useful fansite for habbo.

But it's to be superior to other people.
"Oh, I own a fansite and you don't." or "My fansite has more members than yours."
And ofcourse to help out other habbos, although the new and not as well known ones don't contribute much to this, as there are much better features on more well known ones.
(Which are well known for a reason)

I'm guessing that a few people do it to learn the ropes, and want something to start on?

But asking this question is like asking what is the point on habbo?
Why spend, so long, trading to make a good looking room. Or pissing your mum off by buying credits.

    What's the point?

Habbo Fansites are a waste of time to be perfectly honest. If your making a site and spending money on it, make it about something good not a load of animated pixels!
