For your first it's pretty good. The more you do the more you'll learn and the better your designs will become. I'd visit that site.

Tips: [only my opinion]
Break up the blue a little, perhaps add a gradient to the background, different colour border around the boxes, etc.

New banner, really, i hate that banner it looks exactly like you made it. The text just slapped right over the poor image.
