There's no need to tell him to give her a break, he's gave some constructive feedback, can't you just thank him, propose that she takes it on-board and then drop the matter?
So what if she is on trial? That means the feedback is even more useful surely.

I do have serveral backing tracks I use. Sometimes maybe I can be a bit too chatty 
I have taken all your comments on board my ship (Ahoy there!) and I will be more careful about when I speak. And yeppy I am only a trialist...please don't hate me!

Bare in mine this DJ is still on trail, so there new, and nervous!
I know i was! And in my first show i think i managed to play about 5 songs becuase i talked so much. But now i have carmed down abit
Thats why trailists like/need suport everyone gets better
