Ok, I'll have a look at a few PSD'sAdobe Photoshop CS3 is a must have.
Start messing around with it with gradients.
I haven't tried this, but someone I know would get free basic layout PSDs to start off with, and mess around with them ending up with a completely different layout.
May want to explore stock photos when doing a layout for a special themed website.
View other websites and designs, even magazine designs, for ideas and inspiration.
Added.
Thanks for tips and sites, know CSS, now just have to figure out divsOk.
1. Try not using habbo-styles in the layouts.
2. Do your own things.
3. Never copy something from another layout!
4. Use Photoshop to design.
5. Learn how to use the Pen Tool. Could be really useful sometimes
6. Use matching colours.
7. When you've learnt how to design, you could start coding.
8. DIV's and CSS coding is probably the best thing =)

If you know CSS, it's great.
DIV's are only the names of the things you add to make them show.
DIVs aren't any specific codes to customize the site.
All divs looks like this:
<div id="CSSNAME"></div>
or
<div class="CSSNAME"></div>
