It is a usb one but it is not to do with which port I use as I have checked them all and used other computers and it still doesnt' work. It is almost definately a problem with the harddrive not the computer..

Ok, next question, What type of HD is in the case?
E.g: SATA , IDE
Its a USB hard drive...?
Let's face it - you probably killed the hard drive.
It's not an enclosure? lol
Pretty sure stephen is correct on this one. had a old HDD lying around and got a case for it and i did exactly the same and it did exactly the same as what has happened to you. But differance is for me it was no loss as it was like a 40gb old ide hdd.
Well I guess the next question is how do I retireve the files from it?
