    It is a usb one but it is not to do with which port I use as I have checked them all and used other computers and it still doesnt' work. It is almost definately a problem with the harddrive not the computer..

    Yes, but each USB Hard Drive has a casing, with a HD drive in it

    Pretty sure stephen is correct on this one. had a old HDD lying around and got a case for it and i did exactly the same and it did exactly the same as what has happened to you. But differance is for me it was no loss as it was like a 40gb old ide hdd.

    If the HDD has failed and is dead you cant unless you take it to a local computer store who do data retervil.
