After I passed my driving test I bought a Citroen Saxo 1.1, 1 owner, 30k on the clock and cheap, it was nippy, low on insurance, although it had no power steering, but was manageable. It was 8 years old, and it was very reliable.

As a cheap first car I would recommend the same or a Peugeot 106. I've not driven a Vauxhall or a Ford, so can't comment on them, although I know that the Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 has one of the lowest insurance groups.
It's the quality of your posts that count, not the quantity!

Then the insurance will be huge on them unless their on their parents policy. Or maybe they have just been cheap and stuck a sport badge onto the back of a normal clio

    Mk2 is better than mk4+5!

    Mk1 owns them all.
    One for the road.
