After I passed my driving test I bought a Citroen Saxo 1.1, 1 owner, 30k on the clock and cheap, it was nippy, low on insurance, although it had no power steering, but was manageable. It was 8 years old, and it was very reliable.
As a cheap first car I would recommend the same or a Peugeot 106. I've not driven a Vauxhall or a Ford, so can't comment on them, although I know that the Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 has one of the lowest insurance groups.It's the quality of your posts that count, not the quantity!
