I can't stand the first, 2 and 3 were fairly decent. Expect more and more sequels until the cash cow of this franchise is empty. See Scream 4, 5 and 6 for more details...

If in your opinion its getting better then maybe 4 will be yet another improvement?

Also great horror doesnt have to be all X rated, the Blair Witch Project being a good example.

    Indeed, maybe 4 will.

The Blair Witch Project is utter tripe. People seem to think it created the cinema verite style of photography. It's a blatant rip-off of The Last Broadcast.

And no, good horror doesn't need to be R-Rated, see Drag Me to Hell, but more often than not nowadays, mainstream theatrical releases of horror are often cut to ribbons to ensure a wider audience. The reason is obvious, but it takes from the film when you know there is more content that was both filmed and in the original script, and you have to wait for the unrated cut on the DVD to see the film in its best form.

Isnt that just modern Hollywood anyway though? Watered down scripts and 'seen it before' horror scenarios

I liked the Blair Witch, one of the first horror films I saw and I find tension is what gets to me most so it made a big impression.
    something.

There's a lot of scene it before horror, but no scripts are ever watered down from the writer. A writer's right is to produce whatever the hell he/she wants, and will always have this is in mind when screenwriting, but sometimes violence, etc is asked to be lessened by the producers, but more often than not, what's in the script is shot and then cut at the word of the producers in order to guage a wider audience. These days the actual ratings board is better at letting things slide than some producers.
