Go for art, you get can a job and have a fallback. Chances are heavily against you that you're going to have a career in music, I'm sorry to say. You need a fallback.

Let me tell you how it is

There is no money in being an artist.
There is no money in being in a band.

Both of these 'career' paths are very high risk and there is a constant chance of complete failure and lack of work, with no guaranteed wage, in fact you would be lucky to live comfortably off either of these choices.

There is no point in painting pretty pictures, exhibiting them and hoping to sell a few. Chances are, it'll take you years to build enough of a reputation to make the canvas you painted on actually be worth more than you bought it for. If you were to take the art route, take the skills and the knowledge from Art as a whole, and apply all of your skills to a job commercially viable with a definite payback. For example becoming a fashion designer, set designer, visual assistant, graphic designer, the list goes on. All of these industries have a point to them and are big buck. You will definitely make a decent living if you took this kind of approach.

There is no point in relying on a band for your income. Why? Because you can't trust other people in a band - people WILL drop out, delay decision making, miss auditions. Stressful. Musicians are at the bottom of the pile. They get paid peanuts for what they do - all the cash goes to management and production. Everyone but the band sees a profit, especially the record company the band is signed to. And don't give me all this mess about 'oh well we'll do it ourselves, we'll stick it out to the bitter end, we're dedicated'. Because you're not. There is no real benefit from being in a band any more, apart from getting noticed in the public eye - which isn't always a good thing. Now, the actual writing of the music is where good money lies. Beyonce doesn't write her music, 13 year old Swiss kids in their bedrooms do. They get rich off copyright.

Seriously, it's people like you that made me quit HxF a few months back. It's just so annoying how some people think they know it all. Who are you to actually give some sort of feedback on my post? Sorry if I don't spent about 10 minutes writing 4 paragraphs on how I think i'm amazing and above whoever made this thread. :S
