Last few computers its been about 10 months between each computer.
My laptops have each lasted over a year, with my current one lasting over a year and it still has a long time left in it (running XP on it makes it seem faster).
My tower upstairs (which is mainly used to store things on) is about 5 years old for certain parts (motherboard) but i've bought a new harddrive for it not long ago (350GB).
I usually replace my laptop every 3 years roughly (well, replace as in they need so many parts the Whatever Happens plan just sends a voucher for a new one.)
As for a desktop, I've never actually bought one. I got one for Christmas one year (2001, and it was WINDOWS 98), and inherited our old desktop in 2005.

I generally think around 16-20 months, mostly because computer capabilities double every 18 months. How often do you think you should and why?
How often do you buy a new one and why?
Edit: The reason why I made this thread is because ive had my laptop about 1 year and 2 months and its starting to slow down, ive tried many things such as updating ram, removing unwanted programs, disk cleanup, disk defragment and basically everything. (Any tips to speed it up please add)
Is my laptop ready for the bin?
Addressing the slow computer, reinstall the operating system. If you want to make your computer faster then that's the first step, I reinstall every 3-6 months.

I had my old pc from January 2006 until a few months ago when I built this beast and bought my macbook.
I generally prefer to run it until I can no longer do what I do - infact my friend now has my old pc so seldom do I think I need to get this by this, unless it breaks.
Ex-janitor. Might pop in from time to time, otherwise you can grab all my information from http://jamesy.me.uk/
New one every 4/5 years or so, if it lasts till then anyway. Don't see the need in buying a new one all the time, will replace parts if needed whenever though.
Im not too fussy with computers/laptops i get one about every 2-3 years![]()

Currently i seem to add 1-2 pc's each year, though theses are generally old ones i picked up cheap. I don't do a proper upgrade of my main pc (other than component changes) more than once every 3 or so years - not much of a gamer, so past-gen tech serves me well
(Lots of older pc's > 1 top end pc) for my use's ... its also cheaper
