The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as always. If we're talking about the best new movie though it would have to be between Avatar and District 9. Watchmen was pretty good, too. I still have yet to see Star Trek but have high hopes.

Tough one. I liked Watchmen and Star Trek as blockbusters.

no great indie releases this year though.

Seriously district 9? I thought that was one of the worst movies of the year, lol, was awful. The hangover (I think it was called) was awesome, hadn't laughed that much and that hard for a long time.

I think it was because I just was not expecting that to happen or it to be like that. I went with friends because I knew there was hype and wanted to see it myself. The mock documentary style was annoying and so was the South African accent. I just wasn't impressed, the story line wasn't too bad, just the way it was filmed with that infuriating guy.

Hi5! I thought Star Trek was brilliant, your hopes should remain high .

District 9 must really be a Marmite film! Every single opinion I've heard of it is either love or hate. I agree the mockumentary style takes a lot of getting used to and the accents were unbearable but if you manage to see past those things, it is a truly awesome film.

Inglorious could have been my best film on a different year, but there was so much great cinema this year (can't believe someone said it was a rubbish year for it!). I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned Up because I've heard so many people praise it endlessly. Personally I think it was pretty average for a Pixar flick.

So really you were put off because it defied your expectations? I went in with an open mind and ended up loving it. I thought the main character was great as well, he was so believable as a normal person befallen upon all of these unfortunate situations and outcomes. I can't imagine anyone else performing the role quite as well, and I don't think the movie would have been as good if a big name actor was behind the wheel. Alas, I guess it wasn't for everyone!

I watched Star Trek last night and loved it. Definitely one of the best Blockbusters of the year. I had no idea Simon Pegg was in it either so that was a pleasant surprise when he showed up. Great movie, wish I saw it in the cinema.

Same, I've either seen undenying love or extreme hate. Loads of people also claim to dislike it because aparrently its a racist film. Isn't that whats its like for every film though? Some people'll love it, others'll hate it.

I was going to mention Up, but while I enjoyed it I most definitely didn't think it was Pixar's best movie. Light years away from the likes of Toy Story, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. I didn't come away from the movie thinking 'wow that was amazing' like I did with Avatar or District 9, but still, it was a pretty good movie. Just not up there with everyone else this year. Perhaps in the top five, though.

Yep it is a nice surprise , so was Leonard Nimoy because I didn't realise he was going to make an appearance either. I hate it when people say D9 is racist. It just shows how they've missed the whole point. And that's exactly what I think of Up (love the bit in bold btw ).

Edit@Adam: Maybe that's a factor in our differing opinions because I don't think I had even heard of it until not long before I saw it and what I had seen/heard of it didn't give me very high hopes. Personally I think that's a good thing when going to see a film.
