MKV to AVI

Why does mkv exist? Its so horrible and nothing plays it, all my south park episodes are in mkv so I can't play them on my ps3

High qaulity, small file size.

That's why I'm converting them, need to stream em over to my 360 and PS3.

MKV is just a container like avi is . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matroska Not a codec or anything like that. You could put DivX or XviD inside a MKV if you wanted.

But avi plays on my ps3 and mkv doesn't And my processor is too crap to convert anything effectively would take a large amount of hours to do all my south parks And why can't you take it out of the MKV once you've put it in? Then put it into a nice avi? Why has no gimp made that easy and quick yet I hate technology

Edit@ Yeah tom I can see why technologically it might be the best but practically its pretty useless unless you just want to watch it on a PC in which case you may as well just stream it off somewhere.

You can demux the mkv containers and extract the audio + video streams but due to MKV being far superior in what it can contain there is no guarantee that once its remuxed into an AVI container that it will even work. AVI is crap.

Oh if you really want to play it on your ps3 use this:

Remuxes the mkv for you automatically into a ps3 compatible format. Assuming the stuff inside the mkv can be played by the ps3..

Yeah there is that but having to buy an extra box just to watch a video for the sake of saving a few megabytes really isn't worth it. Especially when I have a PS3 which can play video files.

MKV files don't play on my ipod either, forgot about that

You don't save any space by using a specific container...

Extracting video and/or audio streams from a container and placing some/all of them in another same/different type container without transcoding.

(can also include subtitles/other data if the containers support it)
