Just to piss on the "it can only be used offensively" fire, the word retardation is commonly used when discussing cars and motorsport as it describes the negative acceleration experienced by the car. On the same note you can say the word the car was not [size=4]******[size]ed enough to slow down for the corner.

But I'm just playing devils advocate, its rightly filtered because its main use is as a slur towards disabled people.

No jumping on any band wagon Gomme - it has always been my view on this word. This has been filtered since the year dot on this forum and as you say you could say it in real life as a joke to a friend without offence but I can't really think of any situation when it could be used like that on here.

Although I agree that there is no point in unfiltering it, retard isn't confined to the 'offensive' defintion revolving mental retardation - it can be used to describe objects or people that are not operating properly, for example, looking at a friend tripping or running around ungracefully causing a stir. The main difference is that physical retardation has to be witnessed physically, which won't really happen on this forum, seeing as it's just words
Unless someone posts a video of a "retaarrd".

I agree that the word retard has a number of meanings, and can be used in several contexts. Nevertheless, it's never been an issue that you cannot use it before? Additionally, the fact of the matter is that the majority of our members only know of it / use it in the context of an insult. There is no need to unfilter it, and if we were to do so, it would only very rarely be used in a non offensive context (in my opinion).

Also I obviously had to avoid the filter to show it.
So you answered your own question then? There's pretty much no offensive context for the word. Even used correctly in a medical thread where the word may be appropriate, I could still imagine it coming across fairly harshly in the general context of a forum.
