If it has XP then I hope you didnt buy the upgrade; fresh install disc only pls.!
If its vista I hope you bought the correct version (e.g Vista Home Professional -> Windows 7 Home Professional)

    If not, waste of money

Sorry if im wrong but if you do a clean install for example Windows Home - Windows 7 Professional or whatever as a complete fresh install surely it doesnt matter what windows OS you are previously running, I did Home Premium - Ultimate as a clean install and it went fine? Unless you want to keep documents and programs, a clean install shouldn't require 'Home Premium - Home premium' installation

Home Premium - Ultimate works as an upgrade anyway.

Ah that would explain it then, so essentially you cant go Home Premium - Home Basic or Starter for example?

if you do a clean install, you can.

but home basic and starter aren't available to purchase for consumers anyway. they're designed for developing markets and netbooks respectively.
