I didn't know .NET actually did anything like this, I always assumed it was some boring background program linked with Windows Live and other Windows programs

.NET is part of some languages like VB.NET, you need the .NET frameworks to run these programs

Sounds like something you do not need to know. Take French for example, it exists but you do not really need to care about it
