The first SAW was the only one to be written and directed by James Wan, based on his 10-minute short, and it's a genuinely great film. Extremely refreshing at the time, although Saw is essentially an ultra-violent reworking of The Abominable Dr. Phibeswith Vincent Price. I rate them as follows...

SAW - Excellent
SAW II - Very Good
SAW III - Average
SAW IV - Less than okay
SAW V - Awful
SAW VI - Not bad

I'd rate them thus follows.

SAW - Enjoyable
SAW II - Meh
SAW III - Terrible
SAW IV - Terrible
SAW V - Unwatchable
SAW VI - Havn't seen.

Hard to comprehend they built a whole seven-film franchise out of torture porn.

Not to dismiss the first two, and possibly the sixth.

After Saw going from unique to generic horror movie, I hope the story of 7 will remind us of how much better they could of turned this series into.
