The Desire supports the latest of Android updates unrooted and will for many more years as it's sister N1 is the official Google developer phone.

Don't underestimate the difference Dean. I have to say I did too when I went from my G1 to the Nexus (a very similar move as going from the Hero to Desire would be) and I was absolutely shocked to see how much better the N1 is

Hmm. Between the size of the screen, word recognition and Swype you get used to the lack of keyboard!

I'm assuming you have already considered an iPhone? If the price puts you off then go for an older model, preferably the 3GS. You can get some bargains on ebay!
