Actually Windows Server 2008 was 6.5 literately.

That's incredibly naughty, MSDN should be used for development purposes only

Actually Vista and Server 2008 were 6.5. They share the same base kernel and applications.

Just like Windows XP shares the same version number as Server 2003.

It is for that use (mainly). I just happen to occasionally use it for personal use too. (h)

Hmm, I was certain that Vista was 6.0

    edit:

The RTM's build number jumped to 6000 to reflect Vista's internal version number, NT 6.0.
Just like XP is 5.1 and Server 2003 is 5.2

Edit2: Somehow Windows Seven is designated as 6.1 :S, less than Server 2008

Server is always released after OS, that's why the version number is higher.

Server 2008 R2 was RTM the same time W7 went RTM.
