It's an expensive game, and I can understand your worries with spending £9 a month.
If you feel you could economically cope, then there's nothing stopping you.
At first, it's easy to get lost in the vast communities which create the whole game, even down to prices on the Auction House. Over time however, as you level up, you get a feel for which spells are appropriate in which situation, and advanced raider at level 85 would have felt the same.
Some say it's addictive, but I feel it isn't. Currently, I'm only buying 9 months each year, as some weeks I feel like it isn't worth playing, I have too much else to do. It's generally easy to stop, even for someone like me who has an incredibly limited social life.

people know me because of that shower thing one time and I do not regret anything

upon further review I feel a rather mild regret is warranted

You could always buy a longer subscription which can be slightly cheaper. But it is a good game and a fun one, and you always get used to it pretty quickly. I stopped because of price and as I was quite busy, but I'm sure I'll go back to it again eventually one day.

When you do look at the price though, it isn't that expensive as long as your getting good usage. There is 'free games' but you generally have to pay for either membership or 'credits/coins' etc to take full advantage of the game. With WoW its all inclusive, and what you see is what you get (there isn't many purchasable extras a part from the odd piece of weapon and a pet)

Thank you very much everyone for your replies! I have bought the game and I love it although I don't understand how I get more spells which is going to be impossible to attack other items / creatures with a higher level than me.

It depends on your class. I personally play a mage, and for Alliance you need to >
Stormwind City > Mage District > Huge tower-y thing called the Mage Tower > All the way up and through the greenish portal right at the top > Trainers are in that big room

    If not, I dont know

After all it's a game, it's for entertainment purposes. If you think it's worth the subscription, try it. But Blizzard are so confident that any user will enjoy it that there's a free trial. Give the trial a go, if it isn't your cup of tea you've saved some membership money.
That's why we seize the moment, try to freeze it and own it, squeeze it and hold it cause we consider these minutes golden.

I think it's worthwhile. I played through Vanilla all the way through Cataclysm with real life friends and we still had plenty of time to become one of the best rated bg teams and have a social life too
