Captain's a bit of an idiot, claims it's not his fault that the ship sank because he went off course to somewhere where there aren't any rocks marked, but hasn't been checked nor was it sanctioned by the company the ship is run by and alarms would have come on from going off course as well. Full on ****** and the company has the grounds to sue him for the billions lost in clean-up and cost of the ship

Ship tilted so if you got stuck in rising waters because the exit to your room is the ceiling, well, you can see the problem.

    Not everyone can swim?

I agree with the others at it being the captains fault.

Definitely an arse of a captain, made a statement claiming that he was the last off the ship (as captains are supposed to be) yet at the time of the statement there were 17 missing persons. It's one thing being so incompetant that you actually cause loss of life with your unsanctioned decisions, and yet another on top of that to deny responsibility and lie about what happened

Seems the media are now speaking about these type of cruise-liners in general and are they really safe in terms of how big they are and so on. Not sure what the real answer is but does make you think about it.

Yeah it looks like there's been some complacency in the industry given how safe cruise ships are perceived to be and the rarity of things like this, I suspect they'll be some changes due to this accident in company policies and maybe maritime law. This incident has exposed the weakness in the international maritime law requiring a safety drill within 24 hours, it should be done before the ship leaves port (As many cruise companies do).

Personally I think the captain is being used as a bit of a scapegoat, I find it hard to believe that he really could be that bad and all of it's down to him, I think when the real facts emerge and not the blame game going on now it'll be very different.

A terrible event, one can only think of the horror of being trapped in a room with rising water. As terrible as it is, I have to post this.

However, its prominent ring of stars (circled) sends rather a different message. Hitting the rocks and capsizing is such a neat metaphor for the euro and the European Union in general that one is tempted to remark that the Almighty has a wicked sense of humour.

It's ridiculous and continual comments like that which undermine the entire euro-sceptic movement (and also yourself).

Pffft, they will do. They do this when they're waiting for answers or more stories about the incident.

"Right, let's post some useful information. Done. What now? Let's just call all cruise-liners bad and back it up with odd research which ignores the fact hundreds (or thousands?) of cruise-liners travel around each day and it's rare for problems like this to occur, especially when it was an easy to avoid situation that caused this ridiculous discussion."

The industry does not need extra regulations. Incidents happen and to chuck more laws at the problem is a waste of time and money. The captain is clearly an idiot, but I can't help but think the same way as Jordy - that he may be treated as a scapegoat. Surely there are more staff on board other than the captain? The way the media is reporting this you would think the stewards, bar staff and those in the bridge are thickos - why did they not answer the alarm bells that must of been ringing when no safety drills were being done before leaving port?

It's a good metaphor, but it is a bit too soon when there are still people missing.
