Hmm the current system is a good one. Averages are based on items sold which is the most representative way of doing it. If prices were to reset then it allows people to make up their own prices for items that may not have been sold for a while rather than basing it on prior sales of that particular item.
If an item crashes then it's normally for good reason, for example dark water will probably go down by a few coins now that it's in the catalogue and will inevitably rise when taken out. Sometimes people have urges to build habbo mansions, at which point the demand for kitchen corner blocks, garden hedges, short grass and the like rises and, in turn, so do their value.
