Whats it say in device manager since you did what mrwoo said?

but when I booted up the machine i got an AMD error message saying it can't detect the gfx card and the screen res is correct but is still zoomed in and everything loads like its in safe mode

I assume the AMD error message is from the software?

I found this on the AMD website, this is for 64-bit Windows: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...w_vista64.aspx

Your version and date are different, so that looks like a newer update. Try installing that, up to you whether you want to uninstall your current drivers or catalyst program. I'd probably uninstall catalyst over the drivers.

Yeah that's Catalyst producing that error, uninstall Catalyst and that (hopefully) will uninstall your drivers as well. Then reinstall the driver from that link and hopefully that'll go through without error. May be an idea to do all that in Safe Mode as well.
