You could try exercising during the day so that by the time you go to bed you'll just fall asleep because you'll be exhausted.

Also agree with watching TV/Laptop but it's best to do that when you've brushed your teeth so that when you start getting drowsy you can just switch them off without doing too much to make yourself alert again.

Take a break from the internet for a few days. The lights keep your brain away at night. If you really can't drag yourself away, maybe make sure you don't use it 1-2 hours before you go to bed.

Do relaxing things before you go to sleep, too. Take a bath/shower twenty minutes before you want to go to bed so you're warm when you want to go to sleep. Perhaps do things like listen to relaxing music on your iPod (or whatever, just not computer/laptop) before sleeping as well. I personally recommend music by Band of Horses (Infinite Arms in particular).

This may sound silly, but for me there are three things that actually help me get to sleep.
    1. Getting really warm, under the blanket.
    2. Looking at my nose.. (as silly as it sounds it works)
    3. Drinking hot chocolate right before I go to bed

Like I said, these may sound ridiculous but as well as the obvious ones (i.e. being active), these could help as well.
