Look on spotify for ideas, they list songs by genre.

Meh, no matter what you play i'm sure there will be at least one person at the party dissing it, you should know your friends well enough though to know what kind of music they enjoy.

I suggest getting a program like juxeboxer, you put all your music through it and people can queue songs up and you can set a playlist for when no songs are queued up. Helps if you've got lots of different types of music because then it's catering for everyone's music taste!
