BREAKING: Tory MP defects to UKIP sparking a crunch by-election in Essex

Apparently more Tory MPs - but also Labour MPs - are considering defecting to Ukip based on the result of this by-election.

Nigel Farage has warned David Cameron that more Tories will defect to Ukip after a leading right-wing MP resigned his seat and triggered a by-election.

Douglas Carswell, the MP for Clacton in Essex, yesterday shocked Westminster by announcing that he was joining Mr Farage's party after losing faith in David Cameron's plans to claw back powers from Europe.

He resigned his seat with immediate effect, triggering a by-election which will take place less than a week after the Conservative Party conference and just months before the General Election.

Mr Farage said that other Tory MPs are "considering their options" and that if Ukip wins the by-election it could prove to be a "high noon moment".

Nope but I know a few from that area and it's been all over Heart Essex and the news Loads are tempted to vote for him as he's a good politician in general, regardless of political persuasion.

Good to see 'the Sun' has got its priorities sorted for the main headline, as always!

On the local news today, there were a few people being interviewed saying they would vote for Douglas, because they have done before now.

Incidentally, another UKIP party member is angry, claiming that the constituency was his, not Douglas'.
