I use 8.1 and I won't go onto 10 unless a) I end up with a new laptop b) it reaches 2020 or whatever and they stop supporting 8.1

So many games I play will probably not work and the OS is a complete privacy thief, disappointingly (yes I know most of it can be disabled).

If they work in windows 8.1 then there is a very high chance they work in Windows 10. Mainstream support for 8.1 will probably end in 2018 and the privacy concerns aren't as bad as people think. It depends what you have been reading though, as some people have been saying "Microsoft is spying on your hard drive" etc when that's not the case.

I've seen a lot of people complaining about location settings and stuff that are used in most phones. If for example you use something like Siri to give you help finding somewhere to eat where you are, it's obviously going to need to know your location.

I don't know the full extent of the privacy settings but it seems that a lot of people are complaining about things that are already in phones. If you want to take advantage of all the Cortana features then you'll need locations turned on. If you don't want these features then turn them off.

The main games are the ones I already have issued trying to use on windows 8.1 unfortunately Stuff like The Sims 1 + 2 and some of the old GTA games I have on steam. And no, I haven't read anything to the extent of 'stealing all data from your hard drive'.

I avoid using stuff like Google Now + Google Maps + Enabling GPS + Allowing sites to see my location - on my phone as I'm fully aware of the implications of doing so. I don't completely freak out at the thought of having some of my data used, but I like there to be a limit which I don't allow devices to cross.

Saying that I wouldn't be surprised if my laptop rn or my email does cross that line.
