I've found out, it wasnt actually Walt.
It was a couple of things related to Mr. Eko. (His brother, the man he killed...a lady in a dress :s).
But I don't see why it didn't take him and tried to take Locke. Is it because Eko is a bad man and Locke isn't?
Does the smoke read minds? Ahh...;]

I think it was the same one. We just got a good view of it.
Also, why would Eko send Charlie higher up the tree. So it wouldn't see him?

If I remember rightly, he sent him up higher to find the beechcraft plane thingy
