We do have the most athletes competing to be fair
Exactly why I called GB a "startup sporting nation", as they had only started developing their sports less than a decade ago via funding from things such as lotteries etc. and they can only grow as seen by the results from Beijing and here.
Russia is already developed as a sporting nation, and is going in decline. For them, it's more political, there's a whole government committee, which is massive, dedicated to the Olympics. Plus, British athletes have to fund themselves often (not always), in Russia it's all sponsored and they get loads of perks. This is why you see many British athletes from private schools (not all) win.
Also, Britain benefited big time as the host nation for automatic qualification in many events.
