It's ridiculous, it's not about equality at all. If it was then any student making fun of another for any reason should be punishable in the same way. You shouldn't get a harsher treatment for bullying someone for being black/gay or whatever than you would for bullying someone for just being ugly or smelling bad or something.

Agreed, just because they're gay or black or something doesn't mean anybody who pushes them around should get more in trouble then the person who teases someone for being ugly. I don't get the difference, the ugly person can't help themselves being ugly, nor can a black or gay person.
