1400kbps. The iPod is capable of playing 1500kbps however I find sometimes Handbdrake may sometimes go slightly over this and the movie will not sync to the iPod, therefore I use 1400kbps for a good leeway. I also embed soft-subtitles, meaning I can choose whether or not I want subtitles to show on the iPod video player. I also use two pass encoding :]

I don't know - someone recommended me to do it (I saw it on a MacWorld video) and I did and basically it just rips the DVD twice over the same file, it takes longer but there is a noticable difference in quality, and the file size is no bigger then it would be without using it.

If you download a film about 1:30 hours long off somewhere like the Pirate Bay they are around 600mb, then you can compress it further and it will still look brilliant on the Touch...

Wrong. The films you get off piratebay are mostly in .avi format which is much more compressed than mp4. When converted to mp4 anyway you will end up with a bigger file.
