It was in production but got CANCELLED. As they couldn't decide on how to split the profits.

If I remember correctly, they were going to release it on the Virtual Console and XBLA but Iwata didn't like the fact that XBLA's would be a modified version with online play involved. Real shame too. There was problems with the James Bond rights too, not to mention separate parts of the code belonged to different parties.

Seriously.
What happened is Rare developed the new version under Microsoft but Nintendo also helped to make Goldeneye so they sought Nintendos permission to release it but Nintendo refused all of the deals. Even if Nintendo gave the go ahead (They wont because it will attract hardcore old Nintendo fans to the 360) Microsoft would still have to speak to Activision who own the 007 licence.
The Wii should have more priority over it than the Xbox in my opinion "/ But I think the game would suck immensely now that it's aged.

Talking with very reliable sources, and seeing evidence ourselves, Xbox Evolved believes that Microsoft, Rareware, MGM Studios (studio that makes the James Bond 007 movies) and Activision (holds the license for James Bond 007 titles right now) have come to an agreement to bring the Rareware developed Goldeneye 007 out to Xbox Live Arcade shortly before the new game developed by Activision is released.
The title will feature updated graphics, and of course an all-new Xbox Live multiplayer. Not only that, but we have found evidence that Rareware is planning on releasing even more of their back catalog onto Xbox Live Arcade, specifically, Perfect Dark and the original Banjo-Kazooie. Expect more on at least Goldeneye 007 later this year.
This Looks Interesting
GOLDENEYE 007 - I HAD IT ON N64 WHEN I WAS 6/7 LOVED IT..
Can't they release it untouched? Old, good games that are updated turn out crap.

It was Nintendo that stopped it from passing last year, I cant see them agreeing to it? Unless of course they've remade the whole game which kinda defeats the point. Its also been rumoured that Nintendo threatened to not allow any Activision games to be released on the Wii or DS if it was given to the 360, apparently they didnt want the original classic damaged and its reputation removed.
