I don't see the big deal, she was honest which makes a change. Maybe the question is, are America ready to understand honesty? Technically it's civil partnerships and I think marriage is defined as between a man and woman anyway. It's a debate about re-writing a definition, even though civil partnerships seems a more appropriate title (though that may be down to marriage being so heavily associated between a man and a woman that it just looks and sounds odd with regard to a man and a man or a woman and a woman).
