Of course it's worth it, it's an iPhone. The best way to do it is to get one on pay as you go and put your own sim card in it so you get more minutes/texts. You won't be able to get free browsing (at least I don't think so) but can download app's or w/e with wifi. They are £538 if you get the better one, which I would advise you to get. I've had an iPhone since the very first day it came out, I've gone from the first one (8GB) to the second one (16GB 3G) and recently got the third one (32GB 3GS). And can tell you that it will be the best phone you have ever had and you will stick with iPhones for the foreseeable future.

I'd certainly look into other phones before getting the iPhone, it used to be far superior to anything in the market in terms of features and performance but that's no longer the case, some of the newer Android/WinMo devices are better and of course there's the BlackBerry Storm and Palm Pre (Coming to the UK very soon).
You also have the fact that there's no longer the whole "iPhone wow!" thing about them. Seeing as pretty much anyone who buys a new mobile phone seems to end up getting one, and they feature in every TV Show and Film. They're no longer anything special or something to show off about as you're just another person with an iPhone
I was also reading in the news this week that the prices will not come down much at all when they come to the UK on Orange and Vodafone. They're rumoured to be coming down about £5 on the most expensives contracts. Nothing worth waiting around for that's sure. Apple charge so much for the iPhones, believe it or not, the networks struggle to make profit on it, hence the high prices and why they won't be coming down.
Besides waiting for technology is ridiculous, you buy it when you want it, if you were to wait around for better products you'd never end up buying anything as technology is improving and getting cheaper all the time.

I think if Iphone was more expensive at the start and way more inclusive they would have got way more sales, At the moment i know like 10 people with iPhones and 1 with a G1.

G1 pwns iphone, actually the android market place pwns the apple market, mostly because its more suttle with what applications are allowed onto the network.
