I don't think I'd be able to find suitable drives for XP with a new PC anyway.

When it was just XP, installing anything required installation CDs, while Vista and 7 are good enough to find any sort of driver themselves and quickly. XP never really had nor does it have compatibility, it relies on CDs and the miserable sack of flesh to do everything for it, while the other two get on and do what they have to while the miserable sack of flesh behind the computer got on and did what they wanted to do Plug and play never really existed, only for things like keyboards and mice - simple things like scanners and webcams needed the CD to even get recognised by the OS. Vista nad 7 just chuck around generic drivers and sends out a Windows Update to find the official drivers and installs them whenever it does its update and install procedure. I noticed this with network printers, 7 and Vista find them and install appropriate drivers, while XP makes a chore out of the whole thing

So in short, XP is out-dated and relies too much on a user input, while Vista and 7 like to have things plugged in and playing. The only thing I've found that doesn't immediately work are Sound Card drivers, like the Creative X-Fi range, and network adaptors, but they're easy to find and once installed they don't always need to restart. XP does and still does it seems :/

EDIT: Just remembered, network printers install on XP, but it requires the CD to use the driver exact. Vista needed you to select a printer/driver, and 7 just finds one itself.

I would say Vista or 7. As Tom and Matt have said, I have never had any problems with either of them but I do remember one time when I put XP on my vista laptop and the laptop kept crashing freezing BSODing, the works, but was perfect in Vista. I even installed drivers from Toshiba website but nothing helped that XP install to run stable, even Linux could run more stable than XP.

Well no-one is saying there's anything majorly wrong with Vista, they're just saying you might as well go with Windows 7 seeing as it's the new Windows OS which is an improvement on Vista.
