Well, it's like with Avatar. One of the most hyped films in years, but I didn't think it lived up to, nor deserved the hype. I gave it 3/5 based purely on the visual effects, and reviews that openly give it 4 or 5/5 whilst saying that everything except the visual effects is pretty shoddy, shouldn't be writing reviews. Bad story, characters and script simply cannot be forgiven all because of fancy 3D effects. They are the foundations of any good film, not effects, which is what annoys me with many reviews, so that's why I gave it the 3/5. 3D is a gimmick, it isn't the future of movies. Most film-makers hate shooting in 3D, and I'm sure as hell glad.

I agree that 3D is a gimmick, and I haven't seen the film in 3D yet so I can't really comment but I have heard that the 3D in Avatar is used more as a depth of field to see into the screen and immerse yourself in the environment rather than flying objects straight into your face and the like.

I don't praise Avatar just because of the effects though. I genuinely thought the characters were great.

Edit: yeah Never, and I think it does the job of putting you in their world extremely well.

The effects are commendable, and definitely the best 3D FX ever produced, yet I was never immersed in "Pandora" (awful name). Probably because I've seen that kind of world of floating mountains and magical forests many times before.

I guess it comes down to the extent of what films people have watched.

Zombieland. I wasn't expecting much from it but I really enjoyed it
