Last time I was in Canada there was hardly any snow. What do tire chains look like?

I've heard about Americans doing that, never seen it before though... do you remove the tyre, fit the chain, then replace the tyre? Surely it makes the ride kind of bumpy over areas where there isn't much snow?

Not bothered if it snows or not, kinda used to all of the weather considering where I live. Ah well!
