Coin operated boy, sitting on the shelf he is just a toy, but I turn him on and he comes to life, automatic joy, that is why I want a coin operated boy.

Rune kiteshield - (Costs around 50k)

Other than the range and -1 mage defence the rune kiteshield is a lot better, and cheaper. Why do people spend more money on a worse shield? Unless it's just for looks.
People buy them for the ranged deffence, I have one in my bank just for when I duel rangers. When you see people walking around with them fighting melee people they're most likely noobs- who've probably dueled people with a granite sheilds before, who they couldn't hit, and assumed it was because of their sheilds.

Also some monsters do range; for example the rangers outside the games room and throwing ogres are pretty strong, bringing a granite sheild might help. (The orgres are extremely strong if you haven't got armour on, I've been there before whilst getting climbing boots and they almost killed me).

Edit: Also granite sheilds are better for pking as they don't suffer as bad from mage as a rune kite/d sq would.

    It's all about "the look"
People in the red/blue armour most oftenly have that on because they can't afford better armour, or because they don't know how rubish it is.
Somtimes higher levels have it on because they want to show how much they play castle wars, and having the silver or gold armour on is a bit more understandable.
    kinda quit.

It doesn't, just saying that you don't know what monsters range you must be a noob.
