But yeah, I think she'd appreciate it if you thought of the ideas yourself rather than giving her a gift that was someone elses idea. Even if you wanted to post somewhere else and you got ideas there, at least make it possible for her not to know it's not your idea?

It depends on the person really. She could easily feel horrible that you spent more than $50, because she didn't and she may feel guilty. Personally, if a spending limit is put in place, it's probably better to follow it.
