Can a boy hit a girl?

I'd say I guy can hit a girl for the exact same reasons a girl can hit a guy. Self defence or if one is being playful with one's partner...

Like others have said if they hit you first then I don't see why you can't hit them back. However, if you have the mindset of oh I'll hit them anyway then that's wrong.

I've never understood why hitting a girl hitting a boy is okay though?
I only feel it is okay under any gender for self-defense.
