never had Spotify but obviously I went for the free Apple Music trial then stuck with it

I use Spotify, I did try out Apple Music as you can get a free 3 month trial if you're new to it but I didn't like the lack of features such as sharing playlists, finding playlists and all that jazz with Apple Music. Maybe if they add that in the future I'll switch but for now I'm sticking with Spotify Premium.

i used Spotify a bit lately though, some reason i googled in a band and listened to all their albums for free (that i was going to download) so i dont get what people are paying for

People who pay for Spotify Premium are doing that because they can play any song on there, download music and listen offline via the app on desktop and mobile, no adverts and better sound quality basically.
