If you've known this person long enough to know they are who they say they are, and you've had proof that they are, such as photos, web cam sessions, maybe even phone calls, and you take someone with you and meet in a public open space, then yeah, i would say that it's okay to met people on the internet.
But, if you've not known them long, and you've rarely seen them and so on, then i think it would be a bit unsafe, as you may not be 100% sure who they are, and you could end up in a bit of a mess.
