Religion is not the only reason it was done, it was done in 18th century America because it was believed it would stop boys doing what most teens do, although most people don't do it because of that anymore it's why it is still common practice (because fathers want it done for their son).

i was circumcised at 12 for religious purposes. i didn't get it done at birth because my grandmother wouldn't allow it. the surgery did not hurt at all because i was put to sleep. the problem starts once you're out of the hospital. you can't move about or go out that often as it might bleed drastically. you have to take care of 'it' well so that it will heal within 2 weeks or less. it's nothing really, you just have to endure a little pain for a while after the surgery.
