You can't jump in a falling lift before it hits the ground. It doesn't work because you aren't pushing off of anything solid. If it did work, you would just hit the roof and die instantly, leaving you a mushy pile of flesh and blood on the floor (unless your blood is really sticky, then you'd be on the roof).
