The only good thing about the Director's Cut was that for some unknown reason (even unknown to him) Kevin Smith was on the commentary.

Pretty much all the Director's Cut is is that for each chapter of the movie the director put up a page from the book Darko is reading in the movie and it explains exactly what is going on and what will follow. Some of it is interresting, little details that you'd miss, but most of it just ruins the story for you. It also completely changes the meaning behind the movie for the viewer from a complex love story (sacrificing himself to save another) to a movie about time traveling.

They actually made and released the book. It's not called "Donnie Darko" though, not sure what it's called. I'm sure you could find it online somewhere though.
