The trouble with the lack of structure in ither forums is that there is no incentive to defend a point as a whole rationally and so disagreements spiral into selective single sentence quoting and rather than well constructed and coherent argument we all too often see people lose sight of the discussion by attacking words rather than the point they try to make.
Current affairs should certainly be part of debating on the forum but it needs to be realised that current affairs extend far beyond politics and that the more widely relatable a topic is (something based on sexuality or gender for example on this particular forum) the better it is going to be received. If you post about a general election you're going to get a maximum of five to six people debating whereas if you create a debate about habbo or music or fashion or any other "low culture" topic, because of the nature of this forum and the interests of its members, those debates will be more well received. Try not to use debates as a platform for pushing political agendas or getting the apathetic generation interested -- they just won't bite. Cater to the people and they will hopefully become more involved.
